poem: 'to see new englandly'

· theology,lectionary,poetry

On Magnificat Sunday, a small thing: a poem inspired by another young woman who was surprised by joy in unexpected places.

Blessin's, --Tom

TO SEE NEW ENGLANDLY

after Emily Dickinson

A book of pressed flow’rs,

a Maid’s dearest toy

is—'freshingly—a doorway

into secret Joy—

that desire whose fulfillment

is Yearning, far

greater than Pleasure,

distant—as a Star

and near as the budding

of a violet

in a girl’s Garden—unfolding

into Yet—
